Kerry Travellers Health and Community Development Project
The Kerry Travellers Health and Community Development Project is a county-wide endeavour, and has been established as a Community Development Project since 1996. Our work is based on an acknowledgement of the separate and distinct culture of the Traveller community, which informs all areas of work practice. We adopt a community development approach to all work. As such it involves:-
- On-going consultation with the Traveller community;
- The involvement of the Traveller community assessing its own needs;
- Developing the capacity of Travellers to be a part of the strategies, which address those needs;
- Combating poverty and marginalisation.

Two FREE week holiday
Enter details on the National Citizen Service page (parents get your child to do it) and to find out about your nearest scheme. You must be in school year 11 and have turned 16 by 31 Aug 2012. There’s no official end date but NCS recommends you book by Easter.
About half the partners don’t charge for the NCS, otherwise the max is £80 and meals are included. Bursaries are available as providers aren’t allowed to turn away kids for financial reasons.
What do I get? There are 30,000 places in all areas of England for the NCS. The three-week scheme takes place from Jun-Aug 2012. Exact dates vary per provider. Week one (residential): Outdoor activities focusing on personal and social development. Week two (residential): Team tasks to help the local community. This week is also in a residential setting, but in participants’ local areas. Week three (at home): Design & deliver a social plan to make a positive change to local communities.
After those three weeks, kids are encouraged to do 30 hours social work in their own time. They’ll also get a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.
The detail: The NCS is a Government initiative and the providers include local charities such as Changemakers, Catch 22 and The Challenge Network. Qualified instructors and trained group leaders are around at all times to help with any problems.
Feedback from last year: “Highly recommend it, stops the kids being bored too.” – Ann “All food, activities, accommodation & equipment included, great value & a fantastic experience!” – Jeanette “My son took part last year and it was well worth it!!! He had 2 residential trips and did community work at a day centre painting and gardening. He is applying to be an ambassador this year!!” – Trudy
